Police in Irvine, Calif., are investigating the double murder of a college basketball coach and her fiancé after their bodies were found sitting in a parked car on the top floor of a parking garage Sunday night. The victims - Cal State Fullerton assistant women's basketball coach Monica Quan, 28, and her fiance Keith Lawrence, 27 – were found by police after a passerby reported seeing a body slumped over the steering wheel.

Police told The Orange County Register it was not a murder-suicide and no signs of struggle were obvious.

“It doesn’t appear they were robbed,” Irvine Police Lt. Julia Engen said. “There’s no obvious motive.”

The couple had recently become engaged and moved to the area because of its reputation for safety. The parking complex they were found in requires a key-code entry, and security cameras are placed throughout the building, but the security measures appear to have done little good.

"We've been having some smash-and-grab break-ins for about two years," resident Nick Chapman told KABC in Los Angeles. "My car got broken into, my wife's car got broken into. We're definitely going to watch over our shoulder a little bit more. You certainly don't want to have to be concerned for safety where you live."

Quan was in the midst of her second season working as a coach at Fullerton. Lawrence worked at the University of Southern California as a public safety officer. Both played had basketball at Concordia University.

“The loss of any member of the Titan family causes our community great grief, but the loss of one of our own under these circumstances is indeed tragic and heart-wrenching," university President Mildred Garcia said in a statement Monday. "We hope that Monica's family and friends will feel and be comforted by our support during this difficult time."

Counselors were made available for students, but Fullerton basketball players were especially upset with the news that “Coach Mo” had been killed. Head coach Marcia Foster wept during a news conference, saying, “A really bright light was put out way too soon.

"As a second-year assistant, she was someone I called on to tell me the truth," Foster said. "I loved that about her. I loved her work ethic. I loved her passion for life."
