Fortune Teller

Whether or not one believes in the myth of the perfect palindrome -- 11/11/11 (read as Friday, Nov. 11, 2011) -- being capable of bringing fortune or disaster to the planet, the day is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime moment; there won't be another like it for another 100 years, literally.

If people believe getting married when the clock ticks 11:11:11 on 11.11.11 will ensure a lifetime of happiness, then so be it. But the doomsday theorists go a step further to predict that the alignment of so many 1s on earth corresponds to some kind of galactic realignment bringing disaster to earth.

Interestingly, the last time the calendar displayed 11/11/11 (Nov. 11, 1911), a cold wave of uncannily ghostly proportions swept across regions in central U.S. The sudden drop in temperatures, known now as the The Great Blue Norther of 11/11/11, affected Kansas City, Springfield, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The historic wave saw cities dealing with single-digit temperatures, while many Midwestern cities reported record highs and lows.

In Kansas City, the midnight temperature was 11° F (-11.7 °C), dropping from a record high temperature, on the morning of the same day, of 76° F (24 °C).

In Springfield, Missouri, the temperature difference on the same day was even more extreme. From an 80 °F (27 °C) high, the temperature dropped to 13 °F (-11 °C).

Oklahoma City recorded a high of 83 °F (28 °C) and a low of 17 °F (-8 °C) on the same day, in addition to being blanketed by a dust storm.

Severe weather buffeted the upper Mississippi Valley and the states of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The F4 tornado that hit Janesville, Wisconsin killed 9 and injured 50.

An extremely strong storm system separating warm, humid air from frigid, arctic air was reported as the main factor behind the cold wave. However, although cold snaps do occur in the month of November, the number of weather records that were shattered and the extremes reported had many calling on the supposed effects of the mythical date 11/11/11.

The movie 11-11-11 -- releasing on Nov. 11, in which the protagonist tries to deal with his life when plagued by the events that occur on 11/11/11 -- proclaims: On this day, innocent blood will spill.

Whatever the Spirit Guardians (a group of people who believe in the power of palindromic figures and its connection with otherworldly entities) say about celestial beings coming down upon earth on 11/11/11, the day will never come again for us in this lifetime, for the better or for the worse.
