President and Chief Content Officer of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, Jeff Wachtel, said in a statement, “‘12 Monkeys’ has a dedicated and enthusiastic fan-base thanks to the epic storytelling by [creator] Terry Matalas, and the stellar cast and crew. We are thrilled to be able to offer fans an opportunity to binge the third season as a reward for their lasting support, and we couldn’t be more excited to see where Terry takes us with the final chapter of this fabulous story in the fourth season.”

Matalas shared some insights and spoilers about the upcoming season to Entertainment Weekly. He said, “Each night is going to play like a summer blockbuster.”

While Season 1 was about fathers and Season 2 was about mothers, Season 3 will be about children. “It’s very much the life of one child as the show really explores what it means for these characters to have any kind of notion of family,” Matalas said.

Last season ended with virologist Cassie (Amanda Schull) realizing that she is the mother of the witness, the person responsible for destroying humanity and ushering the apocalypse. She is trapped in 2163 with the witness’ army of the 12 monkeys. Although Season 3 explores motherhood and Cassie’s pregnancy, it will also reveal the history of the army of the 12 monkeys and how they came to be. “We get to see the birth of the army of the 12 monkeys and how the cult came together,” Matalas revealed.

A number of new actors will be seen in Season 3 in guest roles including Hannah Waddingham Faran Tahir and James Callis. “Back To The Future” actor Christopher Lloyd will star as the Pallid Man’s (Tom Noonan) father and the recruiter of the army. Lloyd’s character will make an appearance in episode 6.
