A girl aged 12 years and three months and her 13-year-old boyfriend became Britain’s youngest parents, after the girl gave birth to a baby girl last weekend, according to reports Wednesday.

The girl was only 10 when she met her boyfriend and was in primary school when she conceived last summer and hopes to return to school in September. The young couple, reportedly from north London, cannot be identified due to legal reasons. Reportedly, the girl is five months younger than UK’s previous youngest mother, Tressa Middleton, who gave birth in Edinburgh aged 12 years and eight months in 2006.

“The baby’s mum and dad have been in a relationship for more than a year, so this isn’t a fleeting romance. They intend to stick together and bring their daughter up together,” a source close to the family told The Sun.

The source went on to say that the young couple is “totally in love” and “want to get married,” adding: “Both sets of grandparents are incredibly supportive. It’s a very difficult situation because the parents are both so young — but their families are right behind them.”

The young girl’s mother has now become UK’s youngest grandmother at 27.

The world’s youngest mother is Lina Medina from Ticrapo, Peru, who gave birth to a son in 1939 at the age of five years and seven months.
