"20 Feet From Stardom" star Merry Clayton, 65, is recovering after a serious car accident, reports the Associated Press.

Clayton was featured in the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” which focused on the careers of backup singers, such as Clayton, to some of the world's biggest performers. In a statement, Clayton’s manager, Alan Abraham, said she suffered “severe injuries to her lower body, including major trauma to her lower extremities.” The accident occurred on June 16, and Abrahams says Clayton has “a long road to recovery.”

Clayton has recorded with artists such as Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones and Carole King.
