2013 MTV Video Music Awards: Top 5 Things You Can Expect To Happen At This Weekend’s VMAs [PHOTOS]

The annual MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) never disappoints when it comes to extravagant performances, surprise guests and celebrities in shocking attire. We'll have to wait until Sunday night to find out who this year’s winners are, but in the meantime here are five things we'll likely see at the big event this weekend:

1. There might be “surprise” performances. The popular '90s boy band ‘N Sync shot down rumors that they were scheduled to perform at Sunday’s big event. According to former member Lance Bass, reports that the “No Strings Attached” group was reuniting after an 11-year hiatus started circulating after news broke that fellow group member Justin Timberlake would be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award during the show. “People are automatically going to think we’re going to be there performing, but this is exactly how it happened and I knew these rumors were going to fly,” said Bass.

While the group has yet to confirm or deny whether they'll be on the stage this weekend, the girls from MTV’s “Making the Band” reality show, Danity Kane, have hinted at a possible reunion this weekend. Singers Aubrey O'Day, Dawn Richard, Shannon Bex and Aundrea Fimbres have all teased a possible VMA performance for months on social media, but fans only recently started reporting news of a performance after a countdown was included on their official site. As of Thursday morning, the countdown had two days and 17 hours remaining until the big reveal.

2. One Direction might win big. Pop boy band One Direction's large following makes it easy to predict they will walk away with the socially voted category of “Best Song of the Summer.” While the tally for a majority of the award show's categories are unavailable to the public, One Direction has already dominated one of the two visible categories with their single “Best Song Ever." As of Thursday morning, One Direction was in first place with more than 5.5 million votes. “We Can’t Stop” singer Miley Cyrus was in second with 3.4 million votes.

3. The show will have a new venue. After years at Rockefeller Center in New York City, the event venue shifts this year to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. MTV has already promoted the new location in multiple advertisements for the show, with a little help from some famous faces. Miley Cyrus, who is scheduled to perform her single “We Can’t Stop,” can be seen in a promo for the show dancing in a Brooklyn subway; a similar ad featuring fellow singer Katy Perry coming out of a New York City sewer has also aired. Both singers' promos were also accompanied by the Beastie Boys song “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.”

4. Lady Gaga will most likely shock and confuse us again. Considering Lady Gaga’s MTV VMAs track record, her opening performance at this Sunday’s show will likely create major buzz. Gaga, who recently released the single “Applause,” last opened the VMAs in 2011, playing the role of her male alter-ego "Jo Calderone" and even refusing to break character for reporters after the show.

5. We might have another Kanye West freak-out moment. Taylor Swift, beware: Kanye West will be at Sunday’s event! With country singing sensation Swift up for multiple awards, including “Video of the Year,” there's a chance the rapper might grab the stage again, like his highly criticized outburst during her acceptance speech for the same award in 2009.

The MTV VMAs airs Sunday, Aug. 25, at 9 p.m. ET.
