A U.S. Geological Survey confirmed an earthquake struck central Virginia at 1:53 p.m. EDT on Tuesday afternoon

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit near Charlottesville, Va., and tremors were felt throughout the East Coast, including the Big Apple.

The John. F. Kennedy Airport is also reported to have shut down.
