A massive 60-vehicle accident pile up took place on Interstate 5 in Siskiyou County after Ice on the road caused a semi truck to crash into a concrete wall.

According to CBS News in Sacramento, the pileup took place on about a two-mile stretch of the northbound I-5 between Yreka and Hornbrook, just south of the Oregon border.

The California Highway Patrol’s incident website said that the semi truck crashed into a concrete wall after losing control on black ice. The temperature in Yreka was down to 21 degrees at 9:30 p.m., according to the CBS affiliate.

The National Weather Service earlier Tuesday had issued a winter weather advisory for the area.

A witness told CBS13 she heard the semi hit something, and then heard a series of other crashes before driving to the nearby rest stop to call 911.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Julie Hutchinson says a number of people suffered minor to moderate injuries in a series of crashes.

Traffic reports from the area surrounding the accident indicate that the interstate was shut down while crews accessed the scene from the southbound lanes, but is now back open.
