Cersei Mother's Day
On “Game of Thrones,” Tommem (Dean-Charles Chapman) has one of the worst mothers in Westeros, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). HBO

Mothers should be appreciated, especially on Mother’s Day. But not all mothers are made equal. Some of the best TV shows have terrible family matriarchs, and a few are downright evil. Mothers from “Game of Thrones” and “Shameless” definitely shouldn’t expect anything from their kids on Sunday, May 8. These terrible TV moms will make you grateful for your own mother.

Cersei Lannister from “Game of Thrones” — Cersei (Lena Headey) loves her children, but she isn’t really a great parent. She manipulates her kids in order to have power, but that hasn’t worked very well for her lately on the HBO series. Her decision to give the Faith Militant control has led to her having no power at all.

Ellis Grey from “Grey’s Anatomy” — Imagine taking care of your mother just to find out she’s disappointed with your level of success. That was the situation Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) had to deal with when Ellis (Kate Burton) temporarily became alert while battling Alzheimer’s disease on the ABC drama. Even after her death, Ellis’ secrets continued to turn Meredith’s world upside down. She never explained that Meredith had a baby sister, Maggie (Kelly McCreary).

Lori-Anne Schmidt from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” — Your kid is found alive after 15 years missing, and you don’t even call her to say hi? Lori-Anne (Lisa Kudrow) doesn’t have much interest in being a mother, and it left Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) with a lot of issues in Season 2 of the Netflix comedy.

Monica from “Shameless” — She let Frank (William H. Macy), an addict who is perpetually drunk and typically unemployed, raise their five children on the Showtime dramedy. That’s some pretty awful parenting.

Vampire Diaries Damon and Stefan's Mom
Lily Salvatore (Annie Wersching) had a complicated relationship with her sons on “The Vampire Diaries.” CW

Lily Salvatore from “The Vampire Diaries” — Lily’s (Annie Wersching) relationship with her kids is pretty complicated, but at the end of the day, she never told her sons that she was still alive (or undead, technically). She prioritized her new family of Heretics over her boys for way too long, and she is the one who came up with the idea to put the Sleeping Beauty curse on Elena (Nina Dobrev) on the CW series. Though Stefan (Paul Wesley) forgave her before she died, she still is far from mother of the year.

Nancy Botwin from “Weeds” — Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) was a suburban drug dealer. She couldn’t manage to keep that part of her life from her sons, so Silas (Hunter Parrish) became a dealer for her. She neglected her other son Shane (Alexander Gould) a bit more, and he eventually became a murderer. And that’s just the short version of why she’s a terrible parent.

Constance from “American Horror Story: Murder House” — She was awful in many ways, but Constance (Jessica Lange) was particularly mean to her daughter Adelaide (Jamie Brewer) in the first season of the FX show. Constance would often comment of Adelaide’s weight and tried to keep her away from other people. Once, Constance locked her daughter, who had Down syndrome, in a closet full of mirrors as punishment.
