Sahar Gul, 15, was brutally tortured, beaten and locked in a toilet by her husband's family for months after she refused to become a prostitute, officials said on Saturday. The in-laws of Sahar Gul, a 15-year-old Afghan girl, were Tuesday sentenced to 10 years in prison for the unsavory and barbaric treatment they inflicted on her after she had refused to enter prostitution.

The court sentenced her father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law each to 10 years in prison on Tuesday, Afghanistan's supreme court spokesman Abdul Wakil Omari was quoted as saying by the AFP. Gul's father-in-law and husband are absconding.

Unhappy with the verdict, Women for Afghan Women, a rights group which assisted Gul in the court case, will file an appeal to increase the sentence. We are not happy with the sentence, we are going to help her appeal. How can someone get only 10 years in prison for torturing a girl to almost death? When she first entered the court and saw her in-laws, she was afraid and shaking, but later she calmed down and asked for death penalty for her in-laws, group's program manager Huma Safi was quoted as saying by the AFP.

The in-laws had tortured the girl for six months. She was beaten up and locked in the toilet. They pulled out her nails and hair, giving her barely any food and water for survival. She was burnt with cigarettes, and chunks of flesh were cut out with pliers, according to a report in the Daily mail published in January.

For several months I was locked up in a toilet by my in-laws and particularly my mother-in-law. I was denied food and water. I was tortured and beaten, Gul told the media at the time of her rescue in December last year.

Gul became the face of women's rights in Afghanistan after she was rescued. Her ordeal was discovered when the neighbors heard her crying and moaning in pain, and a relative informed the police.
