“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2, episode 6, featured plenty of changes for Coulson’s team. Hunter (Nick Blood) and Bobbi Morse (Adrianne Palicki) had to work together, despite their ugly divorce. Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) had to figure out how to simply be around each other. But Skye (Chloe Bennett) and Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) had to separate. Ward was no longer in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody by the end of episode 6.

Talbot (Adrian Pasdar) was trying to turn the U.N. against S.H.I.E.L.D. “We thought S.H.I.E.L.D. was protecting us, but in truth they took advantage of our good faith — and they still are,” he said.

A representative questioned Talbot, but they were interrupted by an attack. Terrorists attacked and started disintegrating victims. The Hydra terrorists claimed they were S.H.I.E.L.D. After the attack, Senator Christian Ward (Tim DeKay) wanted to put S.H.I.E.L.D. in the ground — but it seems like he is more worried about the world finding out Grant Ward is his brother. He made it his mission to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D.

As usual, Skye was sent down to Grant’s cell to get information from him. He warned her that his brother was crazy. He reminded Skye of the well incident that he told her about in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 1. Christian threw their brother Thomas in a well and wouldn’t let Grant save him. Eventually, he went behind Christian’s back and rescued their younger brother.

“He’s not what he seems, and if he thinks that you can lead him to me … He gets joy from one thing: hurting people,” Ward said.

Coulson heard different childhood memories when he snuck into Senator Ward’s office and threatened to reveal Grant to the world. Christian told Coulson that their relationship was never very good. He claimed that Grant attacked their brother Thomas and then said Christian made him do it. He claimed that he saw something in his eyes that was a hint of evil. Yet Coulson wasn’t much interested in Ward’s childhood. He wanted to get down to business.

“I think I know a way we can both have what we want,” Coulson said.

Skye went back down to Grant’s cell. She wanted to finally hear what he had to say about her family. Skye asked Ward for all of the information he had on her father. When Hydra found Skye and her mother in China, they killed her mother. Skye’s father killed all the agents and destroyed the village. He didn’t know where or what her father was. Skye thanked him for giving her all the information he had, and then she revealed that they were giving him to his brother.

Coulson came down to take him away, and Ward pleaded with Coulson. He couldn’t go to his brother, and he thought he was working on gaining Coulson's trust back. He thought he was working toward redemption.

“I’m still part of your team,” he reasoned.

Coulson made it clear that he hadn’t been part of the team for a long time. He killed too many agents and tried to kill Fitz and Simmons. Ward said his brother wanted to “publicly execute” him, but Coulson didn’t care.

Christian held a press conference while Grant was taken out of S.H.I.E.L.D. “Just as good and evil existed side by side in S.H.I.E.L.D., the same was true in my home,” Senator Ward said. Christian revealed his brother as Hydra. It seems that the trade made the U.S. government accept S.H.I.E.L.D. as a force of good. May (Ming-Na Wen) handed over one of the terrorists to Talbot and he shook her hand. It looks like handing over Ward changed everything for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Coulson took Grant to several FBI agents who were going to transport him to a new jail cell. “Tell Skye this doesn’t change anything,” Ward said. “I’ll keep my promise.”

That didn’t mean he would do as he was told. After Coulson left, the FBI only put him in handcuffs — a rookie mistake. Ward appeared to break the bones of his hand to escape the cuffs. He stole one of the agents’ guns to attack them.
