“Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 has put Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) through the ringer. Just when Fitz stopped hallucinating her, Simmons returned from going undercover. FitzSimmons didn’t exactly have a warm reunion, and it seems they’ll finally confront each other about what happened when they were underwater. In “Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2, episode 9, the duo will have a conversation about “the reason behind Fitz’s selfless act from the Season 1 finale during Tuesday’s episode,” Entertainment Weekly reports.

Fitz made his reasons pretty clear when the two were underwater in the Season 1 finale. After Ward (Brett Dalton) released them into the ocean in an airtight cell, Fitz found a way out that would only allow Simmons to survive. He told her that he had romantic feelings for her and he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he didn’t save her. He planned to sacrifice himself for her, but Simmons pulled him up to the surface with her. The two have never addressed his feelings on screen.

Since returning from working undercover with Hydra, FitzSimmons’ relationship has been strained. Fitz has had to deal with brain damage that he doesn’t know if he can recover from, and he had to adjust to his new life without Simmons.

It was revealed that Simmons didn’t tell Fitz where she was going. He thought she was going to visit her parents, but then she left without a word for months. Simmons revealed to Mack (Henry Simmons) that it wasn’t just the big assignment that pulled her away from the team.

“Look, I know you two have a past but from what I've seen the only thing that makes him worse is you,” Mack said in episode 6.

“I know,” Simmons said tearfully. “Why do you think I left?”

Will a confrontation finally allow the duo to get back to where they once were? Could they finally start a romantic relationship? It doesn’t seem likely. While Fitz may acknowledge his romantic feelings for Simmons, he’ll also make “a surprising new declaration that could shake up the team,” Entertainment Weekly added. Whatever he says will apparently be a tearjerker.

While we would love to have a reason for happy tears, “Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 hasn’t been warm and fuzzy so far. We'd like Fitz to announce that he will use Coulson's memory machine to fix his injuries, but he is probably making a decision that’ll leave fans upset. Could he be leaving the team? Simmons’ presence is clearly a lot for him to handle, and he just might have to remove himself from a painful situation.

Whatever Fitz’s big reveal turns out to be, it will come when the team is already spread too thin. In episode 9, the team will discover what the blue aliens are, find an alien city and Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) will have to fight her doppelganger again. Fitz’s “declaration” will make the episode jam-packed with drama.

“Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2, episode 9 airs Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 9 p.m. EST on ABC. What do you think Fitz will reveal? Do you think there’s a chance it might be good news? Share your theories in the comments section below!
