Skye Inhuman
Skye (Chloe Bennet) will see drastically different reactions from the team once they discover her powers on "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Season 2. ABC

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 returned Tuesday with a bang — and a lot of prejudices. As Skye (Chloe Bennet) and Raina (Ruth Negga) came out of the Terrigen Mist, it became clear that fear was causing Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) to think differently. She claimed that no one should be studying alien powers and technology. Instead, they should be getting rid of all of it so it can’t hurt anyone.

Of course, Simmons was unaware that Skye had such powers when she made those claims. She was freaking out because she saw Raina’s physical appearance and DNA had changed, and Raina has always been associated with evil. Simmons wouldn’t feel that way about Skye, right?

When Henstridge was asked if Simmons would “put Skye down” if she discovered Skye’s powers, the actress wasn’t optimistic. "In the mindset she's in right now, yeah, I think so," Henstridge told E! Online. "Simmons is shutting down and she's taking orders from Coulson [Clark Gregg] and just doing it. As she sees it, the stakes are enormous and she can't let this happen again. She can't go through this again. She's taking a very scientific route. It's her way of grieving."

It seems Skye will be keeping her powers a secret from her friends for a while. Luckily, she has Fitz (Iain De Caestecker). While Inhuman powers aren’t quite the same as Fitz’ brain injury at the beginning of the season, he knows what it’s like to be treated differently.

"People are starting to question things, and with the way that he keeps the secret with Skye, I think that's more based on what happened to him and how people treated him," Caestecker said. "He's like, 'Let's just take a second.' At that point I think he feels like he's the only one that really understands what she must be going through, that change."

Don’t expect Fitz to be able to talk Simmons down, though. The team formerly known as Fitzsimmons has been on the outs since Simmons returned from Hydra. Fitz even planned to transfer before the death of Triplett (B.J. Britt) and Skye’s transformation. While it looks like Fitz will stick around for the time being, he still won’t be able to have a heart-to-heart with Simmons.

“Instead of us being a team, where we’d all work together and we understood there was a leader and we all had our roles to play, Simmons at least is shutting down and she’s taking orders from Coulson and just doing it,” Henstridge told Variety. “There isn’t that same conversation between her and Fitz, because as she sees it, the stakes are enormous and she can’t let this happen again. She can’t go through this again. She’s taking a very scientific route, which she’s always kind of had in her, but she’s always had Fitz to level her out. That’s not happening now — she’s not listening to Fitz.”

The only thing that might control Simmons reaction is Coulson. In the promo for episode 12 below, it looks like he’ll discover Skye’s powers. If Simmons is only listening to orders from Coulson, he might be the only one who can convince her that Skye isn’t a threat.
