“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 might finally reveal some of Agent Melinda May’s backstory. The tough gal was introduced in the pilot episode as one of the best agents S.H.I.E.L.D. had ever seen. However, she was working on desk duty when Coulson called her to join the team. He convinced her to join when he said that she was only piloting the airplane, and Fury assigned her to watch over Coulson. It sounds like viewers will get some more insight into Melinda May and why she didn’t want to be back in the line of duty.

“She’s gone through something crazy in Bahrain that we’ve hinted at and we will explore in this season,” executive producer Jed Whedon told Entertainment Weekly.

Fans only know a little bit about her time in Bahrain. She had been on a mission when her team was taken hostage. She stormed the building where they were being held and freed all of her team and the civilian hostages. The mission earned her the nickname “The Cavalry,” but May doesn’t like it when people call her that. She has made it clear that the mission changed her, and many assume that whatever happened on the Bahrain mission caused May’s unemotional demeanor.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has slowly been revealing details about May’s life. At the end of Season 1, her mother was introduced and showed audiences that May is from a family of agents in the intelligence community. In the same episode, audiences also discovered that May was once married. Perhaps her former husband was involved in the Bahrain mission.

May was featured heavily in the latest promo video and photos for “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2. It appears that she’ll be living up to her nickname. The Cavalry is kicking plenty of butt in the newest video, and it would appear that she is seeing more action than any other cast member. Watch the latest promo below:

Of course, May’s past isn’t the only part of S.H.I.E.L.D. history being explored in Season 2. Hayley Atwell will show up in the premiere as Agent Peggy Carter in a flashback to the beginning of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 will premiere Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC. What do you think happened in Bahrain? Share your theories below!
