“Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2, episode 4, finally gave Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) some alone time. Granted, it was for a mission, but Philinda shippers were loving their fake date. The two posed as a couple at a fancy party where they had to mingle with diplomats and show off their ballroom dance moves before trying to steal a painting. Wen spoke about the fan favorite relationship and hinted that viewers might have to wait a while before they see Coulson and May get together romantically.

“Yeah, there's definitely something between the two of them, and I like the fact that it's very ambiguous because both of them are such professionals, but they have such history together,” Wen told Comic Book Resources. “And they've been through so much that the two of them can only relate to each other what their past was like and what their personal experiences were like. And I think the strong friendship can lead to things, but right now, it's definitely not something that the writers are making definite, I'll say. But it certainly doesn't help when they put us together in a ballroom scene all dressed up as Bond and Girl Bond [Laughs].”

It also didn’t help that May and Coulson had such touching scenes. Coulson wanted May to kill him if he went off the deep end. GH.325 made Garrett (Bill Paxton) go insane and believe that he was invincible, and the same could happen to the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director. Coulson forced May to agree to take him out, despite her prior plan to take him out of the country and care for him.

“I think those scenes with May and Coulson at the end really showcase her heart and her love for Coulson as a friend or as something else — that’s always been a bit ambiguous,” Wen told Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t think she is able to do it until Coulson gave her the final ultimatum. As a soldier, she has to follow those rules. It would devastate her more than [whatever happened in] Bahrain, more than any experience that she’s gone through. This might destroy not just Coulson, but her.”

Although Wen described “Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 episode 4 as a “Valentine’s Day present” for Philinda fans, she isn’t sure Coulson and May will get together any time soon. However, it doesn’t seem like her ex-lover Ward (Brett Dalton) will be getting in the way if they do.

“I think at this point, May would rather keep her distance with Ward, because deep down inside, like Coulson said, she definitely holds a grudge,” Wen explained to Comic Book Resources. “She relishes it. So if she ever did see Ward, I think she would probably want to tear him a new one … He'll get b---- slapped, you know it!”

The actress seems excited for scenes with Ward, but she isn’t sure that she even wants Coulson and May together yet. “I'd love for it to just continue,” she said. “I'm a big fan of all those shows from ‘Cheers’ to ‘Moonlighting’ where it's just the constant unknown of two people, and if they ever hook up or not.”
