“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” fans might be seeing a nerdy love triangle in Season 2. In last season’s finale, Fitz admitted his feelings for Simmons when he thought he was going to die. He came up with a plan that would only allow Simmons to survive after Ward dumped their cell into the ocean, and he admitted that he wouldn’t be able to live if he saved himself and not the girl he loves. They both survived, so they’re getting together, right?

Not so fast. Fitz needs to wake up first. Although he survived the journey from the bottom of the ocean back to the surface, viewers last saw him unconscious in a sort of incubator. Don’t expect to know Fitz’s condition right away. The writers plan to keep Fitz’s condition under wraps “just long enough that you think, ‘Oh my God, really? Aren’t they going to…?!'” executive producer Jeff Bell told TV Line.

Fitz will still be around, but he might not be the same Fitz. That could also mean that his feelings for Simmons have changed. “The beauty of what [Fitz said to Simmons while trapped underwater] is it makes for lots of complicated feelings,” Bell said. “I’d be curious to see how things will be different or the same now.”

Hopefully, Fitz doesn’t retract his confession. Considering the show introduced the scientists as Fitzsimmons, giving them a couple name before fans could, it would seem like the show will eventually get the two characters together. But "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." doesn't like to be too predictable. Plus, Simmons’s portrayer, Elizabeth Henstridge, didn’t predict Fitz’s declaration at all.

“I think if [Simmons had a clue about Fitz’s feelings], she didn’t recognize it because she didn’t feel that way about him,” Henstridge told Bam!Smack!Pow! at San Diego Comic-Con. “So I think she just assumed that’s how Fitz felt as well.”

If Simmons doesn’t return Fitz’s feelings, things could get awkward considering that they work side by side every day. But remember, the scientist has options. It would be really awkward if Fitz woke up and Simmons wasn’t even single anymore. As we previously reported, BJ Britt is set to return as Agent Triplett. Triplett and Simmons had some undeniable chemistry in Season 1, and Triplett flirted with her throughout the season. Fitz was shown looking a little jealous of Triplett's smooth moves.

With Coulson's limited resources, Triplett will probably be around a lot. He is one of the only former S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that are pretty much guaranteed a spot in Coulson’s new S.H.I.E.L.D. By helping Coulson’s team after Hydra’s takeover, Triplett proved that even though he had been working with Hydra agents, he was loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. That could be quite appealing to Simmons.
