French investigators on Sunday said they found a ‘black box’ with flight data of a 2009 Air France flight that may give new information as to why the plane crashed in the Atlantic ocean, killing 228 people aboard.

“The investigation team has found and identified the parameters recorder – Flight Data recorder at 10:00 UTC this morning,” an official from the French bureau of investigation and analysis (BEA) said in a released statement.

“At this stage, the box looks to be in good physical condition. Our experts tell us that we can expect to be able to read the data,” an official told Agence France Press.

The box was found by a submarine scouring the ocean floor 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) below the surface.
