Amber Heard recently explained her decision to come out several years ago and revealed that a lot of people discouraged her from doing so.

While speaking at the second annual Pride & Prejudice Summit in New York City (via People), Heard recalled the moment she admitted to everyone that she is bisexual. “Well, I always say in response – when I hear someone comment about me coming out, I think it’s funny because I was never in. In part because I was very stubborn, I guess, and also in part because I just didn’t feel it was wrong,” she said.

Talking about how coming out impacted her career, Heard said that a lot of producers told her things will became more difficult if she comes out. “I was the only one working in this way, so it was definitely difficult because no one had done it. I did that even though everyone told me that it would end my career, without a doubt. I rolled my eyes at that and I said, ‘Watch me do it,’ and I did,” she said.

Meanwhile, Heard just finalized her divorce from Johnny Depp a few months ago, but her sexuality did not have anything to do with their separation. Prior to dating him, she was in a relationship with Tasya van Ree. The two of them dated for four years before finally calling it quits in 2012.

When Heard first came out, she and Ree were still dating. During one protest that they attended together, a reporter asked who she was with and what their relationship was. “I just answered honestly, the way I always answered had there not been a tape recorder on me,” she said.
