“Zombieland” actress Amber Heard announced she was bisexual in 2010 and while she was never ashamed of her sexuality, she didn’t like being attached to a label. The star famously dated Tasya van Ree in 2009 and married — and then divorced — actor Johnny Depp.

Heard, 30, was never secretive about her identity. Her friends and family knew she was attracted to men and women. So when After Ellen asked about her sexuality during a 2010 interview, she wanted to answer honestly.

“I could tell by the look on this person's face it was a big deal,” she said at The Economist's second annual Pride & Prejudice event in New York Thursday, according to E! Online. “My poor publicist. Then I realized the gravity of what I had done and why so many people —studio execs, agents, advisors — did not want this coming before my name. I became attached to a label. I've never seen myself defined by the person I'm with.” She added: “I saw myself being in this unique position and having a unique responsibility. So, I bit the bullet.”

Heard wasn’t afraid how the label “bisexual” would affect her career. “As a leading lady, there's a certain amount of wish fulfillment. I was asked ‘How is anyone going to invest in you romantically if they think you're unavailable?’” she said. “I said, ‘Watch me do it.’”

The actress talked about why she didn’t “deny” her sexuality to Ask Ellen in 2010. “I personally think that if you deny something or if you hide something you’re inadvertently admitting it’s wrong,” she said. “I don’t feel like I’m wrong. I don’t feel like millions of people are wrong because they love who they love or they were born how they were born.”
