The 2014 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour is in full swing, which means spoilers, spoilers, SPOILERS! Monday and Tuesday covered Fox and FX, and thanks to Twitter-happy attendees, we’ve got some exciting scoop about season 4 of “American Horror Story.”

According to FX CEO John Landgraf, the next season of “American Horror Story” will likely be a “period piece” with “most” of the cast returning. Landgraf adds that series co-creator Ryan Murphy has “virtual carte blanche to do whatever he wants to do.”

This wouldn’t be the first time that “American Horror Story” tackled a period piece. After the L.A. Murder House in season 1, the anthology series moved onto “Asylum” in season 2, which was set in the 1960s.

Murphy previously revealed that he’d like to change the format of how the theme, location and title is released. “I always thought it would be cool to have the season end and the last image will be this is what the next season is about and you’ll get the title,” he told E! Online at the beginning of October. And while he’d like to cut back on the wait until the season 4 unveiling, he still plans on sprinkling clues throughout season 3. As of October, the co-creator had planned on starting to put clues in the last three episodes of “Coven.” (If this is still accurate, the final three episodes kick off this Wednesday, with episode 11.)

While the theme, location and title have yet to be announced, Murphy did tell The Hollywood Reporter that Jessica Lange will be returning and playing a “Marlene Dietrich figure.” For those unfamiliar with Dietrich, she was a legendary German actress/ singer whose career took off in 1929 when she landed the role of Lola-Lola, a cabaret singer in “The Blue Angel.”

The hint from Murphy has fans thinking that the fourth season of “American Horror Story” could tackle a circus or carnival show story line. Rumors began to circulate regarding the “circus/ carnival” title, encouraging fans to create their own promo art for the October 2014 season.
