Stuart Holden is expected to miss six months after sustaining a knee injury during Bolton's Sunday loss against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old midfielder had 26 stitches in the wound following a harsh tackle from Red Devils' defender Jonny Evans -- a play that resulted in Evans receiving a red card.

For the U.S. and Bolton, the loss of Holden is a tough pill to swallow. The former Houston Dynamo star is coming off a broken leg injury last year while playing in a U.S.-Netherlands friendly.

The injury takes Holden out of U.S. head coach Bob Bradley's plans for a match with Argentina on Saturday in New Jersey. It's also a noteworthy loss for the U.S. and Bolton since Holden has been in particularly good form this season.

Holden said he received a phone call from Evans, who wished him well on his recovery.
