The death of Amy Winehouse was preceded by a drink and drugs binge, a police source told UK paper Mirror. IBTimes is unable to independently confirm this claim.

UK authorities received a call at 4:05 p.m. local time on Jul. 23. The ambulance crew arrived in under five minutes, but Winehouse had already died, according to a London ambulance spokesperson. Winehouse was just 27 years old.

The awarding winning singer's problems with drugs and alcohol are well known. In 2007, her tour was marred by drunkenness during her performance. In her latest tour in 2011, she was again too drunk to perform.

Despite her controversial reputation, Winehouse was celebrated and adored worldwide for her musical talent. In 2006, her album Back to Black won five Grammy Awards.

Upon her death, celebrities and citizens alike poured out their condolences.
