Amy Winehouse would have been a legal mother to 10-year-old Dannika had she not died so suddenly last week.

The 27-year-old soul singer was preparing to adopt Dannika Augustine, whose parents had already signed the adoption papers.

The girl is from St. Lucia, and met Winehouse a couple of years ago when she was visiting the island. The singer took a great interest in her, who was living with her single mother in poverty.

Dannika told The Sunday Mirror, a British publication "Amy was already my other. I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me and we had fun together. I loved her and she loved me..."

Amy Winehouse's death is "the worst thing that ever happened to me," said the girl, who was looking forward to living with the singer.
