Disney Channel has decided to renew “Andi Mack” for Season 2 even though Season 1 is still ongoing.

According to TV Line, the decision came after the sitcom aired the first eight episodes of its freshman season. The series follows the life of Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a tween who discovers that the older woman she grew up calling her sister is actually her mother. Additionally, the couple whom she thought were her parents turned out to be her grandparents.

The series also stars Lilian Bowden as Andi’s older sister-cum-mother, Bex, and Cyrus (Joshua Rush) and Buffy (Sofia Wylie) as Andi’s best friends. The three young girls are all figuring out their place in the world, but Andi’s recent discovery on her 13th birthday will change everything for the trio. In addition, the series features regular appearances from Lauren Tom as Celia and Asher Angel as Jonah. Guest stars include Stoney Westmoreland as Ham, Emily Skinner as Amber and Trent Garrett as Bowie, according to Deadline.

Following the Season 2 renewal, Disney Channel president and CCO Gary Marshal explained why they decided to order another season of the show very early on. “There is not another series out right now – on any platform – that speaks to our core demographic with the authenticity and insight that Terri Minsky and her creative team have captured with ‘Andi Mack.’ This series and these characters are well on their way to becoming this generation’s ‘Lizzie McGuire,’” he said.

“Andi Mack” was actually helmed by “Lizzy McGuire” vet Minsky. She also serves as producer alongside Michelle Manning. Phil Baker executive produces “Andi Mack.”

Meanwhile, in light of the early Season 2 renewal, Disney Channel will air back-to-back episodes of “Andi Mack” starting this Friday, May 26 at 5 p.m. EDT. All eight episodes will be released on the same day so that viewers can catch up on the installments. New episodes of “Andi Mack” will also be released on all Fridays of June to complete Season 1.
