Recap: Shawn Porter (27-2-1, 17 KOs) dominated Andre Berto (31-5, 24 KOs) with a ninth-round technical knockout in a battle of welterweights Saturday night in front of 9,118 at Barclays Center. Berto went down in the second round and then in the ninth, before referee Mark Nelson called the fight over with 1:29 remaining.

Berto struggled with a cut over his eye, while Porter was cut over both eyes. Porter sustained his first cut over his left eye in the second round from an accidental head butt but came back to knock down Berto with hard right hand.

Both boxers were able to absorb some hard punches, but Porter came out swinging for a good portion of the fight and he often landed powerful overhand rights that did damage. Berto often tried to tie Porter up, but Porter did a good job of pushing away his opponent to deliver some effective combinations.

By the eighth round it didn't seem Berto could last much longer and a barrage of punches ultimately led to his demise in the ninth. He had taken a great deal of punishment from Porter's aggressive style and didn't show enough interest in fighting back.

There was a great deal of admiration between the two fighters after the bout. "This was a very good, hard-fought battle for both of us," said Porter.

"It was a New York fight," said Berto, who looked in good shape in the post-fight interviews after taking a bruising for much of the nine rounds.

Current champion Keith Thurman was ringside, scouting his next opponent.

"This was a great fight," Thurman said of Porter's performance. But Thurman did not seem to provide a satisfactory answer when asked about his interest in fighting Porter.

Porter said he wanted to hear a "yes" from Thurman about the upcoming WBC welterweight championship fight after perhaps some apprehension of fighting Porter again following their hard-found battle in 2015.

Berto reportedly earned $1.2 million for Saturday's fight, while Porter received $1 million.

Preview BROOKLYN—Welterweights Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KO) and Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KO) meet on Saturday night at Barclays Center. The winner of the WBC eliminator will be the mandatory challenger to fight champion Keith Thurman.

Berto is listed at 5-foot-8.5 and came in just under the limit at 146.5 pounds, while Porter, who is listed at 5-foot-7, came in at the division’s limit of 147 pounds.

Both boxers fight in an orthodox stance. Porter has a 69.5-inch reach while Berto has a 68.5-inch reach.

Mark Nelson is the referee. The judges are Don Ackerman (New York), Pasquale Procopio (Canada), and Robin Taylor (New York).

In the undercard, Jermell Charlo (29-0, 14 KOs) knocked out Charles Hatley (26-2-1, 18 KOs) in the sixth round to retain his WBC junior middleweight title. Charlo had knocked down Hatley earlier in the fight.

Here is how International Business Times scores the Porter-Berto 12-round fight:

Round 1

The opening minute had little action with both fighters not taking any chances. Berto seemed to land a good combination in the final minute and also seemed to catch Porter with a decent right hand.

Berto, 10-9

Round 2

Porter more active in the first minute, which is his typical style. There was lots of tugging midway through the round, but also some good punches by Porter.

Berto goes down! The fight resumed after a standing eight count. Porter had come on strong at the end to close the round by landing a solid right.

Porter, 10-8

Round 3

Porter coming up big midway through the round. He had Berto on the ropes but Berto boxed his way out of it. These two guys are friends, but there has been a lot of complaining about holding. Porter did enough to win that round.

Porter, 10-9

Round 4

Nelson has warned Porter about the grabbing and had to stop the fight for a moment to attend to blood on Berto's left eye. Berto was able to land a good right but Porter is in control of the fight because of his fierce activity. Berto managed a good uppercut. Porter was a bit more aggressive compared to Berto, but Berto is very much in this fight.

Porter, 10-9

Round 5

Porter dominated the round by going to the body and attacking Berto's left eye. Berto has left himself open too much. With 55 seconds remaining, Nelson had to send Berto to the corner to have his eye examined. Good fight with Porter in control because of his fast hands.

Porter, 10-9

Round 6

Berto doing some stumbling and then bouncing away in the first minute. Berto hasn't been shy about exchanging punches. Berto went down with a slip at about the 1:10 mark. Porter clearly is the better boxer tonight, throwing swift combos and effectively jabbing.

Porter, 10-9

Round 7

A rather uneventful round. Porter is in firm control with another three minutes but Berto looked a bit sharper than in earlier rounds. Tough round to call because neither boxer landed a meaningful punch.

Porter, 10-9

Round 8

Porter dominates the round from start to finish. For a good portion, Berto had his back against the ropes and allowed Porter to slug it out. Porter may be a little fatigued from throwing so many punches. He is winning the fight, while Berto's eye may be a serious problem.

Porter, 10-9

Round 9

Porter wins by TKO! Berto was taking too much punishment and Nelson decided to call it off after one knockdown and then the technical knockout with 1:29 remaining. Porter was effective in his attack the entire night. He often threw wildly but it was efficient boxing because Berto failed to defend himself.
