CyanogenMod has announced development of its CM 11 custom iteration of Android 4.4 KitKat. CyanogenMod

Android 4.4 KitKat may be only a week old, but CyanogenMod is already working on a custom iteration of Google’s latest operating system.

CyanogenMod took to Google + Tuesday to announce its initial development of CyanogenMod 11, which will be its custom support for Android 4.4. Fans should keep in mind that the ROM customization team has not yet released any CM 11 firmware for general use but has simply given an update on its development.

Currently, CyanogenMod says that many of its custom features have easily transferred from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Android 4.4 KitKat; however, others have proved incompatible, including Trebuchet, phone app and lock screen. The team says it is committed to getting these features working for CyanogenMod 11.

Meanwhile, CyanogenMod has made its CM 11 manifest available for advanced users who would like to try their hands at building their own CyanogenMod-based custom ROM.

There is no word on when CyanogenMod 11 nightlies will be available for public download, but the team should announce any updates as soon as they're available. Remember, hounding the CM team about release information is not recommended.

Android 4.4 KitKat is currently exclusive to the Nexus 5 smartphone, with other Google-brand devices including the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Google Play Editions Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One still awaiting an update. However, Android 4.4 has already hit a number of devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, HTC One and Sony Xperia Z by way of custom ROMs developed by Paranoid Android, Rootz Wiki and the guys at XDA Developers Forums.

It hasn’t been long since CyanogenMod began rolling out CM 10.2 nightlies based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Now the team has moved on to release its CM 10.2 M1 “milestone” or the first custom iteration deemed stable enough for daily use. CyanogenMod also recently released its CM 10.1.3 stable build; after nearly a year of development, the Android 4.2.2 custom ROM is on par with its original Android firmware.
