Android 4.4 KitKat Update: CyanogenMod 11 Nightlies Now Available For Galaxy S4, HTC One, And Others

Android 4.4 KitKat is now officially available for a number of devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and LG G2, at least in custom ROM form. CyanogenMod 11 nightlies are now available for these devices and many others currently popular on the market.

About one month ago, CyanogenMod announced that its CM11 custom builds were in development. In that time, we’ve seen the team release its stable builds for CyanogenMod 10.2 based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and focus its attentions to CyanogenMod 11 based on Android 4.4 KitKat. We’ve also seen unofficial CyanogenMod based builds release, in addition to the teams own M1 ‘monthly’ builds for Nexus devices. M builds are notably a bit more stable than nightly builds, but not quite stable release builds.

But the introduction of CM 11 nightly builds indicates that CyanogenMod is now really delving into the development of its custom Android 4.4 firmware. Many users especially prefer custom ROMs like CyanogenMod because they strip away the user interfaces added by device manufacturers and adds other exclusive features, which you wouldn’t find on stock Android or OEM firmware.

The CyanogenMod team says it will be quickly implementing the newly released Android 4.4.1 code into its ROMs, which should be available in its next round of nightlies. The team has also detailed all the the devices, which will now be receiving CM 11 support; the list is extensive, so head over to the CyanogenMod blog for more information. Users should find the usual players from Google, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG and Sony are supported, in addition to many others. Keep in mind many older devices are still receiving CyanogenMod 10.2 support, and some will not update further after that build.

As always, users should take caution when installing custom firmware onto their devices, keeping in mind that their warranties may be avoided. Backing up your device is recommended.
