Will the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 will update to Android 4.4 KitKat? Google/Fionna Agomuoh

Android 4.4 KitKat has been seen officially on several models of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 as well as in firmware leaks for the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4, but many wonder if the latest Android system will be coming to older Samsung devices such as the Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy S3. Currently, some reports suggest that the Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy S3 will be updating to Android 4.4, and that their rollouts will commence around March.

Android Geeks originally got word of a supposed Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 update schedule in mid-January. A Samsung software engineer reportedly told the tech website that the Note 2 and S3 would roll out “in late Q1 2014, soon after the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.” Around this time, Android 4.4 rollouts for the Galaxy Note 3 in several areas of Europe and Asia had begun. Android 4.4 updates can be found for both the SM-N9005 and SM-N900 Galaxy Note 3 models in Poland, Russia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, India, Korea, Singapore, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium/Luxemburg, Germany, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy, Bulgaria, Spain, the Baltic, Malaysia and Thailand. Soon after, the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A variant in Korea began updating to Android 4.4, and at this point it remains the only Galaxy S4 model outside of the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition to be running the new operating system.

All the while, Samsung has yet to make an official announcement on its Android 4.4 update schedule for flagship devices. News has only come from various mobile networks. French carrier SFR initially claimed it would begin updating the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 to Android 4.4 in January, but it has yet to deliver. Canadian carrier Rogers now has its update schedule for the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 listed as “coming soon,” which follows a tentative late-February rollout for the HTC One Mini.

Most recently, tech website Phandroid claims it has gotten from another Samsung insider a list of other non-flagship devices that may receive the Android 4.4 update. This list includes the Samsung Galaxy S4, SGH-i337 model, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, SM-N900a model, which (as noted above) have already begun to update. Other devices expected to update to Android 4.4, according to this list, include those listed below. Phandroid says no other information was given with this tip.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317

Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-i747

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-t217a

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active SGH-i537

Samsung Galaxy Mega SGH-i527

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom SM-c105a

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 SGH-i467

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini SM-g730a

With the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 now updating to Android 4.4, we can be confident that Samsung has plans for further updates of Galaxy Note 3 models and other Galaxy devices. Notably, upon the release of Android 4.4, Samsung U.K. mentioned that the manufacturer would “announce rollout plans for Android 4.4 in due course.” This is as much information as we’ve gotten from Samsung on its Android 4.4 update plans.
