Several Android manufacturers are doing what they can to get their devices updated to the latest Android Nougat as quickly as possible. Manufacturers including HTC and Huawei have already begun updating devices to Android 7.0 Nougat; however, Sony has now set out to be the first non-Google brand to update its devices to Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Sony’s developer team has stated that rolling out Android 7.1.1 Nougat before other manufacturers is its number one priority, according to Xperia Blog. “If you spot any other vendor (excluding Google) releasing this faster than us, prepare your rotten tomatoes!”

The developers have said they have received the Android 7.1.1 from Google and are currently awaiting other requirements, such as the Nougat-based Google Mobile Services apps and the Compatibility Test Suite.

There is no word on when Sony will begin updating devices to Android 7.1.1, or even which devices will update. However, Sony did begin beta testing its Xperia X Performance smartphone for Nougat in late November. Users can now assume this device will likely receive Android 7.1.1 as its official software update.

Sony is sure to have some competition bringing Android 7.1.1 to market. Samsung, which has been beta testing its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge devices since early November, recently confirmed the smartphones would receive the latest Nougat version for their official update. Samsung could roll out its public software as early as mid-December, but most Galaxy S7 models likely won’t update until early 2017.

Currently, the devices running Android 7.1.1 include the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, the Pixel C tablet, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X smartphones, the Nexus 9 tablet and the Nexus Player dongle.
