Android Nougat

The next version of Android following 7.0 Nougat may already have a name, and Google is already teasing it to fans. Google’s Senior VP of Android recently took to Twitter to hint at the possibility of Android 8.0 being called “Oreo.”

In keeping with Google’s tradition of naming its Android versions after sweets, 7.0 was named last year as Nougat succeeding 6.0 Marshmallow. Since Google appears to be sticking with its alphabetical order naming scheme, Android 8.0 lands on “O,” leading fans to speculate on its name.

Hiroshi Lockheimer posted a GIF on his Twitter page showing what looks like an Oreo cake. This has led some people to believe that Android 8.0 might actually be called Android Oreo. Unfortunately, Lockheimer might simply be trolling Android users, like what he did last year for Android 7.0 Nougat.

Back in June 2016, Lockheimer posted a photo showing a list of desserts. The one that caught everyone’s attention was the Nutella pizzetta. A lot of people, and even some publications, jumped to the conclusion that Android 7.0 was going to be named “Nutella.” By the end of the same month however, Google officially announced that Android 7.0’s name was Nougat.

This might simply be Lockheimer having a bit of fun with Android users. Last week, he also posted a photo of the chocolate biscuit snack Pocky with the hashtag #2018, seemingly teasing the 2018 version of Android P, as pointed out by 9To5Google.

Although we still don’t have any idea as to what Android O will be called, Google might already be setting up something for developers. Google’s annual I/O conference is expected to take place next month and it’s possible that the first developer preview of Android O might be released during the event, according to Phone Arena.

This would be the similar strategy that Google had for Android Nougat last year. If the company is truly sticking with its release schedule from last year, Android 8/O/Oreo might officially be released sometime in August.
