It’s been almost a year since she shocked the world by filing for divorce from Brad Pitt, and now, Angelina Jolie is opening up more about her life after her high-profile divorce.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Jolie, 42, opened up about how difficult things were for her and her six children she shares with Pitt after the marriage fell apart, revealing that her recent purchase of a $25 million mansion in Los Angeles is the first time they’ve all felt a little more stable since their lives changed so dramatically.

“It’s just been the hardest time, and we’re just kind of coming up for air. [This house] is a big jump forward for us, and we’re all trying to do our best to heal as our family,” she said.

For the first time, Jolie also opened up a little bit about what led to the painful divorce, which is still yet to be finalized. She didn’t go into too much detail, simply relaying that things had been tense between she and Pitt for a while before she ultimately ended things.

“Things got bad...I didn’t want to use that word... Things became ‘difficult,’” she said.

However, she refuted the claims that the jet-setting lifestyle the family was known for, which saw them all over the globe for different film projects and humanitarian work, was part of the problem or even the direct cause for the couple’s 12-year romance crumbling.

“[Our lifestyle] was not in any way a negative," she said. "That was not the problem. That is and will remain one of the wonderful opportunities we are able to give our children... They’re six very strong-minded, thoughtful, worldly individuals. I’m very proud of them.”

Jolie also admitted, when asked about her ex’s own interview with GQ Style back in May, that they are trying to work together to accomplish “the same goal” when it comes to providing a post-divorce life for their children—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.

“We’re all just healing from the events that led to the filing... They’re not healing from the divorce. They're healing from some... from life, from things in life,” she said of the kids.

The actress and director also revealed for the first time that she has struggled with other health issues in the last year, including a bout of Bell’s Palsey, which she says was cured through acupuncture, as well as hypertension, extra grey hairs and drier skin. She said she wasn’t sure if the health issues came from the early menopause she suffered after her ovaries were removed, or if it was from all of the stress she has gone through the last year instead, but she feels stronger because of the things she’s gone through.

“I can’t tell if It's menopause or if it’s just been the year I’ve had. Sometimes women in families put themselves last until it manifests itself in their own health,” she said. “I actually feel like more of a woman because I’m being smart about my choices, and I’m putting my family first, and I’m in charge of my life and my health. I think that’s what makes a woman complete.”
