Anonymous has called for a "National Day of Rage" in protest of the heavy-handed police action in Ferguson, Missouri, in the wake of the Mike Brown shooting 12 days ago. The activist group says the protests across the U.S. on Thursday will be peaceful demonstrations in support of the people of Ferguson. Anonymous has pushed for transparency in the Brown shooting investigation and called for an end to police brutality in Ferguson and throughout the U.S.

Anonymous announced the demonstrations on Monday following days of clashes between police and protesters in Ferguson. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency and established a midnight curfew on Aug. 16, which was lifted on Monday. He also called the National Guard to establish peace in the St. Louis suburb of 21,000, wracked by the fatal police shooting of the unarmed black teen Aug. 9 on a Ferguson street.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder arrived Wednesday in Ferguson to meet with officials to be briefed on the Brown shooting investigation. "I understand that mistrust. I am the attorney general of the United States. But I am also a black man," said Holder while meeting with members of the community, referring to his own experiences with racial profiling.

Several days after the shooting, an individual who identified with Anonymous, using the Twitter account @TheAnonMessage, released the name of the alleged officer who fatally shot Brown, although that information was incorrect. The decision to release that information has been the source of much debate within Anonymous.

The police department on Aug. 15 finally identified the involved officer as Darren Wilson.
