Of the 19 percent of S&P 500 companies reporting earnings so far, 65 percent have beaten expectations, slightly better than average since 1994, according to Thomson Reuters data.
But are U.S. companies really feeling the pinch of the European debt crisis and China's deceleration?
Caterpillar, which serves as a bellwether for global economic activity and as a barometer for global credit growth, doesn't seem to think so.
The Peoria, Ill.-based producer of industrial equipment and engines has been optimistic on the economic condition and raised its revenue guidance when it reported its first quarter results in April. Analysts seem to agree. The consensus now expects Caterpillar to report a 20 percent rise in revenue and a 50 percent jump in profits.
Companies in the transportation industry that are scheduled to report next week include: Delta Air Lines, US Airways, JetBlue Airways, Boeing and Ford.
In the pharmaceutical sector, Merck, Eli Lilly and Bristol Myers Squibb will be reporting their earnings results.
Other closely watched companies that will be reporting earnings next week include: Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Starbucks, PepsiCo and Visa.

It is expected to report FY 2012 second-quarter EPS of $1.01 on revenue of $12.17 billion, compared with a profit of 95 cents a share on revenue of $12.15 billion in the year-ago period. Merck is trading around $43.53 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 15.44 percent.
