Apple iPhone 6 Rumors: Larger 5.7-Inch Version Will Expand Line Up To Six iDevices, Possible New iPads [VIDEO]

Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 6 has a fairly large number of rumors around it, some great and some mundane. But the most reliable rumors heavily suggest that Apple’s next iPhone will come in two different screen sizes, a 4.7-inch and a 5.7-inch version. The smaller of the two will compete with coming competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S5 or the Nexus 6, and the larger with the Samsung Galaxy Note series. A new report out of Japan suggests that the larger of the two potential iPhones will expand the series offering, meaning Apple might be producing six iDevices, including the rumored iWatch, instead of the current four.

As of the beginning of the year Apple offered two iPhones, the 5s and the 5c, and two iPads, the Air and the Mini Retina. If the report from Mac Otakara is to be believed, the iPhone 6 4.7-inch will replace the 5s, but the 5c will still be available too. Seeing as how the iPhone 5c was just a repackaged iPhone 5 with a new plastic shell, it stands to reason that the 5c will become the 6c, which will be a repackaged 5s. Wow, that was a bit convoluted. Basically, Apple could potentially offer three iPhones: the iPhone 6, the lower-end iPhone 6c and a new big-screen version, possibly called the iPhone 6xl.

The report also suggests that the new iPhone 6 will be 7mm thick, but will have a protruding camera module. However, that would be a major departure from the iPhone’s design, and it alternatively suggests that the smartphone’s final measurement could end up being 7.5mm thick to provide a flat back. The current iPhone 5s is 7.6mm thick, which would mean that Apple wouldn’t be reducing the size of the iPhone at all. If the larger camera is accurate, it might confirm rumors that suggest either a new optical stabilized camera or a light-field camera.

Mac Otakara has a history of accurately predicting new features on the iPhones, so their reports aren’t to be shunned. They correctly forecast the dual-LED flash on the iPhone 5s and the designs for the fifth-gen iPod Touch and the seventh-gen iPod Nano.

In other related news, Apple released iOS 7.1 Monday, a much-needed update to its mobile operating system that fixed a number of bugs and improved overall speed and responsiveness. Interestingly, hidden in the source code were two versions for new iPads, which some have speculated are updates to the iPad Air and the iPad Mini Retina. But the code looks like these would be incremental updates, not new models, so don’t get too excited.
