LG Optimus 3D, which is expected to be released in the US market under the name LG Thrill 4G, boasts of 4.3-inch 3D LCD capacitive qHD touchscreen (480x800 pixel resolution), Android 2.2 OS (Froyo), dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 proccessor, 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD card slot), 512MB RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, proximity sensor and gyro sensor.

Impressive specs but Optimus 3D's strength lies in its dual 5-megapixel camera, which comes with autofocus function and LED flash, and is capable of taking stereoscopic photos & videos. Optimus 3D is also capable of capturing 1080p video @30fps (2D) and 720p@30fps (3D).

The smartphone also comes with PowerVR SGX540 GPU, which promises fluid-like gaming and web browsing experience.

HTC EVO 3D boasts of similar specs in the sense that it comes with 4.3-inch 3D LCD capacitive qHD touchscreen (540x960 pixels resolution), dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, HTC Sense 3.0 UI, 1GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD card), 1GB RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, proximity sensor and gyro sensor.

Like Optimus 3D, EVO 3D has 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and is capable of taking stereoscopic photos (2-megapixel) and videos. Video capture is also possible at 1080p@24fps (2D) and 720p@30fps (3D). The secondary front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera supports video chats.

What sets LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D apart from other high-end smartphones is that both are capable of creating own content, video and photo in 3D.

So can Optimus 3D and EVO 3D take on iPhone? The answer is no. The 3D feature, which is the unique selling point for both the smartphones, isn't enough for either Optimus 3D or EV 3D to beat iPhone. But then again, both the smartphones are not out to challenge iPhone's supremacy. Rather they out to offer themselves as a viable alternative to dedicated handheld game devices. "The era of dedicated handheld gaming is over," LG's mobile communications business CEO Park Jong-seok said at the launch of Optimus 3D in Seoul. But is the world ready for 3D on smartphones?
