The new data, released on Friday, revealed that Apple accounted for 39.2 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers, which was up 0.3 percentage points from February. In comparison, Samsung ranked second with 23 percent market share, up 1.7 percentage points.

BlackBerry came in a poor third, accounting for 4.8 percent of the market in May, down 0.6 percent from February’s 5.4 percent. Microsoft was fourth with 3 percent market share, while Symbian ranked fifth with only 0.4 percent of the U.S. smartphone market.

The findings in both categories, smartphone makers and platforms, reiterate that fact that Apple and Android are the most dominant players in the market and are solidifying their position in the smartphone world at the expense of other brands.

An IDC report in May showed that Android and iOS, together, accounted for 92.3 percent of all smartphone OS shipments during the first quarter of 2013. Android smartphone vendors and Apple shipped a total of 199.5 million devices worldwide during the three-month period ending in March 2013, which was up 59.1 percent from the 125.4 million units shipped during the same quarter in 2012.
