The next generation of iPads could be getting a very high-resolution display: Two of the world's largest makers of liquid crystal displays could be close to closing a deal from Apple Inc., one report says.

The Korea Times is reporting that industry sources have said that LG Display and Samsung Electronics are close to getting big orders from Apple.

That Apple is looking to make such a deal with Samsung is interesting because both companies are in an ongoing legal battle claiming that its competitor copied its designs.

Nevertheless, Apple is reportedly testing Samsung and LG's LCDs at one of its laboratories in China, and both companies were asked to produce screens with better picture quality and density, the source told the newspaper.

The source, who is reportedly close to the talks, said the testing process could be done during the third quarter. The new iPad 3 will have an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide full high definition (HD) viewing experience, the source said.

Reports have been that the new iPad might feature a double-resolution screen of 2048*1536 pixels that will make the device a so-called iPad HD. The new iPad is also expected to be thinner and lighter.

Rumors have also been reported that the iPad 3 may be released as late as next year, while there will be an upgraded iPad 2 this fall instead of Apple's third generation tablet.

Sony, Samsung and Hewlett Packard have released their latest tablets with hopes of taking some of Apple's 82% hold over the US tablet market.
