The gun lobby keeps, as first reported by Talking Points Memo, a list of firearm opponents -- renamed its "enemy list" by the web -- on its official website that was last updated in September 2012. The mammoth list includes 497 national organizations and people who have in some way, “lent monetary, grassroots or some other type of direct support ofanti-gun organizations.”
Some of the names on the list make perfect sense. Who wouldn’t expect the American Civil Liberties Union or the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence to earn the ire of the country’s most influential pro-gun lobby?
But the full extent of the list – which includes 141 organizations, 228 celebrities, 27 “national figures”, 37 journalists and 41 corporations or corporate CEOs – is not only reflective of the NRA’s apparent paranoia (apparently everyone from Alec Baldwin to Henry “The Fonz” Winkler are coming for our guns). In fact, it demonstrates that practically every sector of American society has, at some point, supported firearm restrictions intended to reduce gun violence.
Some of the notable organizations/people on the list include:
- American Medical Association
- American Firearms Association
- American Trauma Association
- National Association of Police Officers
- The United States Catholic Conference, United Methodist Church, United Church for Christ, Unitatarian Universalist Association, etc.
- Dick Van Dyke, an 87-year-old actor known for his 1960s sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show”
- N-Sync, the teen pop group best known for introducing the world to Justin Timberlake
- Ben and Jerry’s, Co.
