After news arose about Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver's separation earlier this month, the reason for their split surfaced as the former California governor admitted to fathering a love child with a former household staff member. Schwarzenegger fathered the child over 10 years ago and has kept it a secret from his wife for 25 years. It was only recently that Shriver learned about the paternity which led to the couple's separation.

Schwarzenegger announced an apology to his wife, family, and friends after leaving the governor's office earlier this year.

After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago. I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry ... I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time. While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not, said the former California governor.

News of the couple's split surprised the media, leaving many curious to the real reason behind the breakup. The names of the staff member and child have not been released to protect their privacy. The only information so far is that the staff member served the Schwarzeneggers for 20 years and voluntarily resigned from her position.

Maria Shriver announced in a statement to People saying, This is a painful and heartbreaking time. As a mother, my concern is for the children. I ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and I try to rebuild our lives and heal. I will have no further comment.

Shriver has received numerous support through her website and twitter page after news emerged about the her husband's love child. The couple will continue living apart as they work through their private and professional careers.

Schwarzenegger has begun making his comeback into the entertainment industry with inked contracts for an upcoming tv show, comic book, and plans for future featured films.

Schwarzenegger and Shriver are parents to four children ages 14 to 21.
