Both sides will perhaps feel disappointed to have to play a replay. While Swansea led heading into the late stages at the Liberty Stadium, Arsenal’s quick-fire double had them anticipating progress at the first time of asking until Danny Graham’s strike three minutes from time.
Arsenal will feel that at home the tie is now in their hands, yet Swansea triumphed with an impressive 2-0 victory when the sides last met at the Emirates, back in December. The Gunners also fell to defeat by the same score line on Sunday against Manchester City following Laurent Koscielny’s early dismissal.
Despite that loss, defender Thomas Vermaelen believes his side can bounce back to keep their hopes alive in the FA Cup.
"There are a lot of big, big fixtures coming up against good teams—big games," he said, according to Arsenal’s official website. "This [Sunday's game] was the first one, we wanted to have a good start and that is why it is more disappointing we could not get a good result. "But against Swansea, I am confident the group will respond on this defeat, and I'm confident we can get a result on Wednesday."
Following his dismissal, Koscielny will be missing through suspension against Swansea. Arsene Wenger will again be without midfielder Mikel Arteta, although he has said that the Spaniard may return earlier than the three weeks originally anticipated.
Swansea manager Michael Laudrup continues to perform wonders as he balances the club’s strong league form with their cup success. The Welsh side recorded an impressive draw at Everton on Saturday and next week will take a 2-0 lead into their Capital One Cup semifinal with Chelsea.
Laudrup has a fully fit squad to choose from, although new loan signing Roland Lamah is not eligible to face Arsenal.
Arsenal (probable)
G: Szczesny
D: Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs
M: Ramsey, Wilshere
Walcott, Cazorla, Podolski
F: Giroud
Swansea (probable)
G: Vorm
D: Rangel, Chico, Williams, Davies
M: Ki, Britton
Hernandez, De Guzman , Routledge
F: Michu
Prediction: Wenger is likely to field a full-strength lineup given that the FA Cup now represents Arsenal’s best chance for silverware this season. The same is not true for Swansea and much could depend on the team Laudrup selects. If the likes of Michu are included then this could well be another evenly-matched contest with Swansea giving Arsenal plenty of problems.
The tie could well go to extra time, but in the end Arsenal may just prevail.
Arsenal 2-1 Swansea
Where to watch: The FA Cup third-round replay will kick-off at 2.30 p.m. ET. A live stream will be available via Fox Soccer 2Go.
