Spitting Sports Stars who preceded Tiger Woods [PHOTOS]

Tiger Woods may still be on the prowl for a victory, but he manages to hit the headlines with controversies following the sex scandal that scathed his reputation last year.

Woods has now landed himself in the long list of spitting Sports stars by letting out a projectile of spittle in disgust after missing a par putt during the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

While spitting is seen as an acceptable practice with respect to some sports such as soccer or even for instance boxers spiting into a bucket, sports such as tennis and golf have taken on a gentlemanly association thus barring out spitting.

Tiger Woods sparked off a row on Sunday when he spit in disgust after missing a par putt on his way to a 3-over 75 on the 12th green during the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

The golfing legend was on Monday fined by the European Tour on Monday for spitting. However, the amount of the fine was not disclosed.

Charles Barkley, who has earned the reputation as the bad boy of the NBA, was fined $10,000 for accidentally spitting on a young girl.

In the 1991 incident that Barkley admitted was the "dumbest" thing he has ever done, the NBA star spit on a fan for heckling him from the sidelines. But Barkley missed the target and the spit landed on a young girl.

In December 1997, Denver Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski spit in the face of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver J.J. Stokes.

The spit of rage reportedly came in response to Stokes' taunting.

Romanowski, who was infamously involved in several quarrels with both teammates and opponents, refused to apologize for spitting at Stokes.

One of the most recalled incidents of spitting sports stars is that of Roberto Alomar spitting on umpire John Hirschbeck.

The second baseman lost his cool in a 1996 game against the Blue Jays. Alomar spit right at Umpire Hirschbeck's face.

He later on defended his rage accusing Hirschbeck of uttering a racial slur.

Alomar was suspended for five games the following season and forced to issue a letter of apology to the umpire.

Romanian Tennis ace Victor Hanescu forfeit his third-round match at Wimbledon 2010 for spitting at the crowd.

Hanescu was heckled by the normally placid crowd at the All-England club after he asked for the match to be called off citing fading light.

The chair umpire denied the request. Hanescu's frustration grew when the spectators began heckling him and he responded by throwing some saliva.
