Renowned collector car auction house, RM Auctions, has announced the auction of the legendary 1970 Porsche 911S owned by movie star Steve McQueen at its annual Monterey sale in California between August 18 and 20, 2011.

Owned by the 'King of Cool' Steve McQueen and featured in his epic Hollywood film Le Mans, the car was displayed during the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and RM Amelia Island sale which took place in Northeast Florida.

Built to the highest 1970 specification, the Slate Grey 911S stars in the film's legendary opening sequence as McQueen's character, hotshot Porsche driver, Michael Delaney, drives through the French countryside, reflecting on life, death, and racing.

There is no more iconic racing film than Le Mans and no more charismatic owner of many of the world's great sports cars than Steve McQueen, stated Rob Myers, Chairman and Founder, RM Auctions.

Combining a well-documented history with an exciting celebrity and screen provenance, it will make for a valuable addition to any notable car collection, he further added.

Following the production of the movie, the 911S model joined McQueen's personal stable of extraordinary motor cars in California. Known for his passion for collectible cars, the actor has amassed a unique collection that over the years included everything from a Jaguar XK-SS, multiple Ferraris, Porsches, airplanes, motorcycles and everything in between.

The August Monterey sale, held during the famous Monterey Classic Car Week, has carved a reputation for bringing together the world's finest automobiles with its most discerning collectors.
