Nintendo's 3DS handheld game console is now available in U.S. stores.

The new device is the first major console to have 3D capabilities built in. It has conjoined dual screens, with the top one having the ability to display 3D pictures without the need for glasses. The bottom screen is touch sensitive. The device comes equipped with three cameras, one inner camera points at the user, while two exterior ones take photos in 2D and 3D.

It is available in stores and online for $249.99 and comes with a collection of pre-installed games. There also a number of games available for purchase upon release, available for $40.

Nintendo 3DS can play 3D video games and take 3D pictures, but that's just the tip of the iceberg, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said in a statement. The 3D display is amazing in its own right, but just as compelling are the new forms of game play it delivers, and the groundbreaking ways it will connect players to new content ... and each other.

Nintendo celebrated the launch of its new device with a midnight event at the New York City Best Buy store in Union Square featuring food, music and giveaways. Other Best Buys across the country held similar type events.

The 3DS has already launched in Japan. According to Media Create data, the 3DS has been the country's top selling console in the four weeks since it has launched and it doubled its closest competitor. Media reports say Nintendo sold out their initial production run of 400,000 units.

Nintendo is looking for similar strong numbers in the U.S. Since being available for pre-sale on Amazon.com, the 3DS has been the top seller in the video game section.

Along with the 3D capability, Nintendo has announced it will roll out additional features equipped for the 3DS. This includes Netflix, internet access, an online store called Nintendo eShop, access to 3D Hollywood movie trailers and free access to more than 10,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots.
