April 7, 2011 4:26 PM EDT

The Boston Red Sox went into the season as favorites to go to the World Series.

So far, they look like favorites to finish last in the American League East. Terry Francona's squad is off to their worst since 1945.

The Red Sox, who have 10 home games coming up, are looking to change their fortunes when they face long-time nemesis the New York Yankees on Friday in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are off to a good start with a 4-2 record. New York has had some strong pitching performances to start the season.

However, the Yankees have played six games at home, while the Red Sox have played six games on the road.

On Friday, two starting pitchers coming off rocky performances in their season debuts will be on the mound as Phil Hughes and John Lackey start the series off.

On Saturday, the Yankees will have Ivan Nova on the hill while Clay Buchholz, who surrendered 18 hits and eight runs over 12 and one-third innings against the Bronx Bombers last season, will be Boston's starter.

The rubber match will feature former Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia for the Yankees, and former World Series MVP Josh Beckett for the Red Sox.

Mark Teixeira already has four home runs for the Yankees, while Adrian Gonzalez has gotten his Red Sox career off to a good start, leading the team with a .304 batting average.
