The Facebook's 'Like' button may find a competitor when Google launches the +1 in the coming weeks.

The company, at the I/O developer conference in San Francisco, gave a brief overview of Google +1, which is similar to Facebook’s Like or Twitter’s Tweet and paves way for the website visitors to approve and contribute an article or a web page.

“Today we’re taking Google a step further, enabling you to share recommendations with the world right in Google’s search results. It’s called +1—the digital shorthand for ‘this is pretty cool’,” said Rob Spiro, Product Manager, in a blog post.

“To recommend something, all you have to do is click +1 on a webpage or ad you find useful. These +1’s will then start appearing in Google’s search results,” he added.

The buttons will be displayed in different shapes and sizes. Users can also create +1 buttons by generating embedded codes.

“We’re confident that +1, combined with all of the social content we’re now including in search, will mean even better, more relevant results than you get today,” Spiro further added.
