Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has apologized to his wife, Maria Shriver after revealing that he had a child with a former household staff member.

I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry, Schwarzenegger said in statement to the L.A. Times. Schwarzenegger, who said he had no excuses, said there were feelings of anger and disappointment among his friends and family.

Shriver told People.com that this is a painful and heartbreaking time.

Schwarzenegger revealed on Monday that the incident took place more than 10 years ago, before he was elected governor.

Shriver told People that her concern as a mother was for the couple's children as I try to rebuild our lives and heal.

Shriver and Schwarzenegger said on May 10 they were living apart while we work on the future of our relationship. They said it was a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us.
