On Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 06:31:52 UTC South of the Fiji Islands, 810 miles from New Zealand, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded, fueling rumors that Harold Camping’s doomsday prediction could be coming true.

As Camping’s prediction proved hoax as New Zealand didn’t have had any earthquake even after 6 P.M., the U.S. Geological Survey recorded quakes, though of less magnitudes, at 12 different locations.

Geologists feel this does not necessarily points towards end of the world predictions, nor should be considered to add to May 21 doomsday or Judgment Day hoopla. However, they acknowledge that earthquakes are on the rise.

“Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant,” USGS said on its official site.

The USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes.

According to National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), about 50 earthquakes each day, or about 20,000 a year, is recorded through seismographs.
