Two-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is likely to face an indictment for using campaign donations to conceal an extra-marital affair and love child, ABC News reported on late Tuesday.

Sources said that the Department of Justice has given the green signal for Edwards' prosecution. The former North Carolina Senator has been informed of the major development that would occur in the next two weeks. It could be an indictment or perhaps a plea deal.

57 years old Edwards have been charged with allegations of campaign violations related to his relationship with video producer Rielle Hunter, who was pregnant with the former U.S. senator's child. Hunter worked as a videographer during his Presidential campaign for the second time. His affair with Hunter, which he finally admitted in August 2008, was uncovered by the National Enquirer in late 2007.

As per the allegations, over $1 million was used to hide Hunter's cover up his affair from public view. According to the ABC report, 100-year-old heiress and philanthropist Rachel Bunny Mellon and Edwards' 2008 finance chairman Fred Baron had paid the amount.

Former Edwards aide Andrew Young wrote in his tell-all book titled The Politician that Edwards definitely knew about the money, and even solicited it, ABC News reported.
