Arizona's Gov. Jan Brewer (center) leaves a federal court after a hearing on the state's immigration law. She had asked the Supreme Court to take up the case after two lower courts blocked provisions of the law. REUTERS

The Supreme Court voted 5-3 to uphold a 2007 Arizona law that punishes businesses that knowingly employ undocumented immigrants.

The decision comes as a controversial 2010 law that sought harsh measures for monitoring undocumented immigrants, including a requirement that law enforcement officers demand identification from anyone who they believe to be undocumented, goes through the appeals process after a lower court struck it down.
