Montreal police shooting kills two

A shooting involving police in downtown Montreal on Tuesday morning killed two men, one of the man being a bystander who was on his way to work.

Early Tuesday morning police were called on reports that a man was slashing garbage bags and overturning garbage bins and throwing the thrash into the street, when the police arrived on the scene to intercept, the man pulled out a knife and a foot chase began.

The police opened fire at the corner of Ste Denis street and Christin street, for reasons yet unknown to investigators.

Police have confirmed the identity of Mario Hamel, a 40-year-old-homeless man, who died from his injuries and the 36 years old innocent bystander who was on his way to work was taken to the hospital in a critical condition and later died in the evening, police have not disclosed his identity.

Sgt. Claude Denis said, "What we've learned is that a few minutes before police arrived, Hamel was threatening someone that he knew with a knife in his hand".
Witness Terry Witwicki said he heard "two shots, bang bang, really quick...and we see this fellow on the sidewalk with a pool of blood all around him."

Aubin Boudreau, director general of Accueil Bonneau, a men's shelter, said Hamel had lived at the shelter for the past two years. According to Boudreau, Hamel collected cans to make money. He said Hamel had a family, including children.
Because the shooting involved Montreal police, the Surete du Quebec have taken over the investigation.
